Rolls-Royce launched the project for the electric aircraft, which was named ACCEL and could reach 480 km / h. The aircraft is intended to make its first in 2020.
The Rolls-Royce brand is a giant engineering company that actually produces Rolls-Royce aircraft engines, although today many people think of it as luxury cars. Rolls-Royce, which also works on electric motors with its partners, seeks to produce the world's fastest electric aircraft with its new project. The target speed of the aircraft is determined to be more than 480 km / h.
The project, which will be called ACCEL (Accelerating the Electrification of Flight), will fly through a fully electric motor. In 2020, the first flight of the aircraft is expected to make in England, the design work is in progress. However, it is obvious that the aircraft will be designed for speeding. The full range of airplanes is around 200 miles (322 km). In short, this airplane will be able to fly from London to Paris after taking off on a single charge and crossing the English Channel.
The ACCEL project is also supported by the UK government. YASA, an expert in electric motors, and Electroflight, an aviation initiative, also support the project. However, the names behind Formula E support the ACCEL project.
Of course, it is also necessary to question why Rolls-Royce did this. Rolls-Royce, which has a serious market share in aircraft engines, seems to be aware of the future of electric motor aircraft in the near future. Therefore, it is very usual and logical to make Rolls-Royce such experiments and specialize in electrically operated aircraft engines in preparation for this future.
